Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater thinking about the movie they're about to see. They spot the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to deliver that experience—or what it takes when it's time to decommission decades of gear and make way for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers was able to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we supported the removal of outdated projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your typical commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Projects like these are one of the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever quite the same, and that's what makes our work rewarding.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the best elements of commercial moving is the diversity.
In one week we're moving an entire school before students return for the new year. The next we're delivering physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we are inside a movie theater, methodically dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it required removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like traveling back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection was established as the industry standard.
For film lovers, it was fascinating.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move has its own story.
Great Projects Start with Thoughtful Planning
Jobs like this do not begin when the moving truck arrives.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team maps out logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the top benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who share the same dedication to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to carry out the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't built with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with slim passageways, tight doorways, and limited access. Some locations have elevators, whereas others do not. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply loading them onto a dolly and heading for the truck.
Each challenge needs to be foreseen before any work begins.
That's when experience makes the difference.
It's About Far More Than Brute Strength
Many people assume moving heavy equipment is purely about strength.
The truth is that commercial moving is about planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Jobs like the AMC equipment removal call for specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to safely navigate oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and safely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. A single careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition can lead to significant damage.
Communication and patience are just as important as strength.
Preserving the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're equally committed to preserving the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a substantial investment, and even modest repairs can prove disruptive and costly.
When a project is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Big commercial moving projects are not a single-person task.
Each member of the crew has a clear role, and communication is essential from beginning to end.
One mover may be steering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another team member is prepping the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work together, there is a rhythm that takes shape. That's something that can't be taught overnight.
Seeing our crew work together was a clear example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's essential to enjoy the experience.
Being employed inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our team couldn't resist heading downstairs for some movie snacks between jobs on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Those moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Transportation
Many people assume moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating several contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees over a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment relocated without disruption.
Certain projects take place overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Each relocation requires adaptability, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when somebody asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has faithfully served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've found that great projects all rely on the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll show up prepared, stay in touch throughout the job, treat their property with respect, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Safeguarding a Piece of Movie History
Among the unexpected highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced unforgettable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the opportunity to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it really was an experience that we will never forget.
